Riki Shulman, artist

Draws, paints and lays the gold leaf by hand. On klaf, nothing can be undone.

Speaks with every family who writes to us, in Israel, the United States and Europe.

“When someone holds one of our pieces, we want them to feel a connection to the Kadosh Baroukh Hou.”
Jewish art only. A blessing, a prayer, a name written for a child.

02 · The material

The klaf. A skin, a light, a sacred text.

Klaf is parchment made from animal skin, the same material used for a Sefer Torah. It breathes, it keeps the grain of a living thing, and it takes gold like nothing else. Every piece begins here, on the bench, in the raking light of a Jerusalem afternoon.

03 · The gesture

Four movements, one hand.

Nothing is rushed. The drawing is made by hand, the colour is laid in washes, the gold is pressed on last. The sacred text can be printed, or written by a sofer STaM for the most demanding pieces.

I

Drawing by hand

The composition is drawn directly on the klaf: pomegranates, vines, cypresses, the walls of Jerusalem. No two drawings are alike, because no two stories are.

II

Colour

Deep blue, wine red, moss green. Watercolour is laid in thin washes so the parchment keeps glowing through the pigment.

III

Gold-leaf relief

The gold is raised, then pressed leaf by leaf. Under a low light it catches and moves. It is the signature of the studio.

IV

The text

By default the sacred text is printed with full transparency. For a ketubah or a prayer meant to be passed down, it can be written by a sofer STaM.

We unrolled it on the table before the wedding and nobody spoke for a minute. It is the first thing our guests ask about.
